The overnight charge is the one cost on this site you can verify to the cent without paying anything to verify it: the rate is published in the platform before you hold, the charge lands against the position after the rollover, and both halves are available on the same day. A swap (or rollover) is the interest you pay or receive for holding a leveraged position overnight at FxPro; you are charged only when a position stays open past that daily rollover, the rate depends on the instrument and on whether you are long or short, and Wednesday nights are charged triple swap to cover the weekend. That triple night is exactly why a single reading is a poor estimate of a week — what you want is a run of consecutive nights, not one figure multiplied by seven. Read the long and short swap per instrument before you hold, write down what you expect, and then see whether the charge agrees with you.

What you are debited (−) or credited (+) per standard lot held past the daily rollover, measured on FxPro’s own MT5 Raw+ feed (with the raw points in brackets). A negative number costs you to hold; a positive one pays you. Triple swap is applied on Wednesday night to cover the weekend value date. Carry / yr is the annualised swap yield (swap × 365 ÷ notional at the live price) — a rough guide to what holding the position costs or earns over a year, shown where we have a live price. Total net cost to hold one standard lot over time — the spread plus accumulated swap. A positive figure is what it costs you; a negative one means you come out ahead (positive carry). For example, holding EUR/USD long for a month costs about $276, while a EUR/USD short earns about $48. Based on measured spreads and current swaps — rates vary.

Avoiding swaps

If you hold positions overnight regularly, a swap-free (Islamic) account may avoid swap interest for eligible clients. Check live swap rates inside your platform before holding overnight.

Measuring an overnight charge, night by night

The check needs one small position and some patience. Open it on the instrument and the side you care about, note the swap figure on the position, let it sit past the daily rollover, and note the figure again. The difference is that night's charge for that size, in the account currency, with nothing inferred and nothing modelled.

Use the smallest order the account allows — 0.01 lot on the measured Raw+ account — because the point of the exercise is the rate, not the money. The charge scales with size, so a minimum position measures the same rate a standard lot would while costing you almost nothing to run.

Hold across consecutive nights rather than dipping in and out. Consecutive nights are what let the shape of the week appear, and the shape is the part that surprises people who priced a multi-day trade from a single night's reading.

The week is not seven identical nights

Positions held over Wednesday night are usually charged triple swap to cover the weekend, when markets are closed but value dates still roll forward. A measurement taken on a Tuesday and multiplied by seven is therefore wrong by two extra nights of charge before you have made any other mistake.

That is also why the holding-cost table on this page runs in days, weeks and months rather than in nights: at those horizons the triple charge is already inside the figure. If you are building your own estimate from your own readings, either measure a whole week or add the two extra nights by hand.

Rates move as well. A reading you took last month describes last month's market; the figures here are re-read from the live feed and stamped with the date they were taken, which is the only honest way to publish a number that does not stand still.

Write the prediction down before the night

Reading the specification first turns the exercise from a surprise into a test. You have a prediction, then you have a measurement, and the two either agree or you have found something worth understanding. Predictions are cheap to write down in advance and impossible to reconstruct honestly afterwards.

Put the expected charge for your size next to the rate you read. Specifications quote swap per standard lot, so a tenth-lot position should show about a tenth of the quoted figure in the morning and a hundredth-lot about a hundredth; that proportionality is the easiest half of the prediction to state in advance and the easiest to check. If the morning figure is something else entirely, the useful questions are the size, the side and the night — in that order.

Keep the sheet. Swap is the one cost on this site that you can check without paying anything to check it, and a few weeks of nights is a stronger basis for planning a held position than any table, including ours.

A four-night check you can run this week

  1. Pick one instrument and one direction, and note the long and short swap from its specification before you open anything at all.
  2. Open the smallest order the account allows — 0.01 lot on the measured Raw+ account — and write down the charge you expect for that size.
  3. Note the swap figure on the position shortly before the daily rollover, and again after it. The difference is that night's charge.
  4. Repeat on consecutive nights so that the run includes a Wednesday, then compare the total against your expected figure counted over the nights held, with Wednesday counted three times.

Four rows is not a study. It is enough to know whether the published rate and your account agree, which is a different and more useful question.

What one night of measurement records

FieldExampleWhy it is in the row
Date of the nightthe night of Tue to WedWednesday nights carry the triple charge
InstrumentEUR/USDSwap is set per instrument, so rows do not transfer
Directionlong or shortThe two sides are separate rates, not one rate mirrored
Lot size0.01The charge scales with size; without it the figure is unreadable
Figure before rolloveras shown on the positionThe baseline half of the difference
Figure after rolloveras shown on the positionThe measurement itself

Six fields, read twice a night. Everything else about the position — entry price, floating profit, your plans for it — belongs somewhere else and only makes the row harder to read later.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I read the swap rate before I hold a position?
In the instrument's specification inside your platform, which lists the long and the short swap separately. It is quoted per lot and it moves with market rates, so read it on the day you plan to hold rather than trusting a figure you noted a month ago.
How do I confirm what I was actually charged?
Leave a small position open past the daily rollover and watch the swap figure attached to that position. It moves once per rollover, so the difference between the figure before and after is that night's charge for the size you held.
How many nights should I measure before trusting an average?
At least a full week, because the week is not uniform. Positions held over Wednesday night are usually charged triple swap to cover the weekend value date, so an average built from a few midweek nights lands in the wrong place. A run of consecutive nights captures the triple charge exactly once, which is the right weight for it.
Why does one night not match the annual carry figure on this page?
Because the annualised number assumes today's rate repeats, and swap rates move. The carry column takes one night's measured charge and stretches it across a whole year, which is useful for ranking instruments against each other and misleading as a forecast. Compare your own nights against the overnight figures in the table above, not against the annualised percentage.
Can I generalise one instrument's measurement to another?
No. Swap is set per instrument and per direction, so each one needs its own nights. Put gold and a currency pair side by side in the measured table above and they sit on entirely different scales — nothing about a metal's overnight charge could be guessed from a major, in size or in sign.
What should I record for each night?
The instrument, the direction, the lot size, the date of the night, and the swap figure before and after the rollover. Without the direction and the size, two nights cannot be compared: the charge scales with the lot and flips with the side.
What is there to measure on a swap-free account?
The zero itself. FxPro offers swap-free (Islamic) accounts to eligible clients, which hold no overnight swap interest, so the check is that the overnight figure stays at zero night after night. Confirm eligibility with FxPro.
Do I need a live account to do this?
A demo position held past the rollover shows you where the figure sits and when it moves, which is most of the method. Confirm the exact rates on the account you will actually trade before you build an estimate on them.

What traders report

Scalpers and intraday traders do not write about swaps, and this set shows it: the only two reviewers who raise the subject are both multi-day traders — one holding short GBP/USD and EUR/USD since November, the other a swing trader who mentions a swap-free Islamic account. If you close before the daily rollover, the cost described on this page is one you will never actually meet.

★★★★★
FxPro doesn't charge high swap commissions. I've been holding short positions on gbpusd and eurusd since november.

I'm a swing trader, so for me the spreads is just nice and acceptable with 0 commission, they offer Islamic swap free.
